Luis is receiving his second Fresh Start surgery at our upcoming Surgery Weekend on July 13 & 14. Luis was born with a rare condition called Ectrodactyly-ectodermal dysplasia-clefting syndrome, or EEC, which caused a variety of deformities for Luis including cleft lip and palate, contracted and fused fingers, speech deficits, and other physical anomalies. Luis’ cleft lip and palate was initially corrected by a different organization, but Luis still has speech difficulties, limited mobility because of his fused and contracted fingers, will require future surgeries to finish the reconstruction of his cleft lip and palate, and suffers from extreme dental decay because of lack of proper dental hygiene and difficulty with dental care because of his craniofacial deformities.
At the March 2013 Surgery Weekend, Luis received his first Fresh Start surgery – reconstructive surgery on his hand by volunteer surgeon Dr. Chao and dental extractions performed by volunteer Dr. Bagheri as part of the initial phase of his new dental plan. Now, Luis is moving on to the next phase of his treatment process and during the July Surgery Weekend Luis will receive surgery to correct his airflow during speech, a common procedure for children born with cleft lip and palate to improve their speech when speech therapy alone is not sufficient. This surgery will improve Luis’ quality of life and will allow him to speak audibly and correctly which is so crucial for children in school and social settings.
Luis is another long-term Fresh Start patient – he has already received over $25,000 in donated medical care, and we will continue to provide him with high-quality, comprehensive care for as long as it is needed. Luis is an energetic 6 year old who deserves a happy, healthy, and confident life – through the help of our volunteers and generous supporters, Luis is on his way to a new life full of possibilities!
