Although Carlos is only six years old, he has already had to face a tragic accident that ripped his world apart. A few years ago, Carlos was playing on a swing set that collapsed, mutilating his eye and part of the right side of his face. Although Carlos did receive multiple surgeries in Mexico after the accident, he still has difficulty opening his right eye, has lost most of his vision, and has issues with his tear duct which causes his tears to flow from his scar instead of his eye. Luckily, Carlos’ family heard about Fresh Start through their church and they knew that this was their last hope for a healthier and happier future for Carlos.
Now Carlos will be receiving his first reconstructive surgery at Fresh Start’s Surgery Weekend on September 15th. The surgery will be performed by volunteers Dr. Morton and Dr. Korn who hope to partially restore his vision, fix his tear duct, and fix his nerves which will allow him to have more control over his eyelid. Although Carlos will require many more surgeries, eye exams, and other appointments and consultations from Fresh Start in the future, this will be the first step on the long journey that will allow him to move on from the tragic accident.
Along with Carlos, ten other children will be receiving reconstructive surgeries on September 15th. These children suffer from many conditions including cleft lip and palate, Apert syndrome, Goldenhar syndrome, and many others. Fresh Start’s volunteers and generous supporters make all of our work possible – they turn our patients’ dreams into reality, giving our patients motivation, confidence, and hope for the future!
