Edilawit was born in Ethiopia and as a young girl developed retinoblastoma, a cancerous tumor in her eye. Luckily, at about two years old, Edilawit had her eye surgically removed, and although the cancer was now gone, she went through much of her childhood with just one eye.
Edilawit required more than just an eye prosthetic, she also needed surgery on her eye socket in order for the prosthetic to fit correctly – luckily, in 2009, when Edilawit was just eight years old, she was referred to Fresh Start. In 2010, Fresh Start brought Edilawit and her family to San Diego and she received reconstructive surgery on her eye socket from volunteer surgeon Dr. Morton. After her surgery, Edilawit was fitted with a prosthetic eye and after a few more months of care, Edilawit was able to to return home to Ethiopia a happy and healthy little girl!
Fresh Start maintains long-term relationships with all of our patients and we truly believe in long-term, comprehensive care, no matter how far a patient must travel. Over the last few years, Edilawit had encountered some problems with her new eye and Fresh Start was unable to find a physician in Ethiopia to help her so Fresh Start decided to bring Edilawit and her family back to San Diego to receive further care. While Edilawit is in San Diego Fresh Start will fit her with a new prosthetic eye, and may provide her with surgery at the upcoming September Surgery Weekend if necessary to ensure that her eye socket can fit the prosthesis. We are excited to continue to care for Edilawit and all of the other children we will be seeing over the September Surgery Weekend – all of their cases are unique and we are proud to provide them with a brighter future!
