November Surgery Weekend Recap

Fresh Start had a successful Surgery Weekend on November 12th and 13th!

- Fresh Start performed 10 reconstructive surgeries on Saturday and 2 additional reconstructive surgeries pre- and post-Surgery Weekend

- On Sunday, Fresh Start had speech therapy services for 7 patients, Cutera Laser Clinic for 8 patients, and many additional consultations, post-ops, and evaluations.

- Fresh Start had over 70 volunteers at this Surgery Weekend, from surgeons providing reconstructive surgeries to non-medical volunteers checking in patients.

Fresh Start performed numerous reconstructive surgeries and other medical treatments at the November Surgery Weekend, but we would like to share a special patient story of Jesely, a young girl who received reconstructive surgery on Saturday.

At this Surgery Weekend, Fresh Start volunteer surgeons Dr. Morton and Dr. Ostrow performed reconstructive surgery on Jesely, a Fresh Start patient suffering from Goldenhar Syndrome. Goldenhar Syndrome is a congenital birth defect which involves deformities of the face and usually includes microtia, eye deformities, and other facial deformities, usually only affecting one side of the face.

Jesely, an eleven year old from Tijuana, received reconstructive surgery on her upper eyelid and surgical removal of her eye on Saturday. Jesely’s family could not afford medical treatments for her and they were very grateful to find Fresh Start Surgical Gifts and to receive all treatments free of charge.

Although Jesely will still require many future treatments for her condition, she is now on her way to a happy and healthy young adulthood. Jesely’s surgery would not have been possible without the support of our devoted medical volunteers and generous donors.
